France withdraws a type of breast implants for cancer risk

The French Health Agency for the safety of Medical Products (Ansm) has decided to withdraw from the market a type of macrotexturized breast implant and mammary implant with surface covered by polyuritene, due to the risk associated with the onset of a rare tumor, anaplastic lymphoma. However, the agency does not recommend preventive explant for women to whom these prostheses have been implanted. The measure decided by the Ansm provides for the prohibition of placing these prostheses on the market, the prohibition of distribution and use and the withdrawal of the prostheses currently on the market. The measure will take effect from 5 April.

The Minister of Health Giulia Grillo requested an urgent opinion to the Higher Health Council. The opinion is required to initiate any initiatives against manufacturers involved in the production of devices at risk.
